Activity 6.2: Keeping Your Focus on the Goal
Leaders face all kinds of intense situations, some of which can be emotionally destabilizing. Yet outstanding leaders like Aaron, whose CEO and beloved mentor died suddenly of a heart attack at a company conference one morning, have learned to focus on important goals and tasks as a way of coping with intense feelings, without being overwhelmed by them. As you have discovered in this chapter, focusing on goals and tasks allows time for a leader to regroup and move forward by providing a much-needed distraction from the distress caused by upsetting situations. Learning to use this type of reframe, however, does not need to be left to chance. Although it is impossible to predict when the next wave of turbulence may occur, reflecting and learning from our experiences can be a powerful teacherâso that when the inevitable strikes and we are again confronting an emotionally challenging time, we can do so from a place of centeredness and focus.
